About the Beech 1900

The 1900 is what happens when a King Air is stretched until it becomes a regional airliner: nineteen seats, a stand-up cabin, and the same reliable turboprops underneath. It sold well commercially and picked up a small military following.

The US Army flies a handful as the C-12J for utility transport, and Taiwan, Egypt and a few others operate them. It is a small fleet and appears here in ones and twos.

The distinguishing feature on the airliner version is a set of small horizontal surfaces on the rear fuselage — tailets, added to fix a stability problem the stretch introduced.

How to recognise it

  • A long, thin low-wing twin turboprop with a T-tail and a row of airliner windows.
  • Small winglet-like surfaces on the rear fuselage below the tail on the 1900D.
  • Noticeably longer than any King Air.
